Audi S7 vs BMW 650i Gran Coupe vs Mercedes-Benz CL S550 This comparison represents a peek into three heavyweight luxury German carmakers' state of the art. The Audi S7, BMW 650i Gran Coupe xDrive, and Mercedes-Benz CLS550 4Matic represent a good chunk of their respective brands' best thinking. But what are these swoopy four-door coupes? (And for the record, we hate the abuse of language that takes place every time a 2-ton sedan is called a "coupe.") The cynical view is that the Germans invented a meal between breakfast and brunch.

Audi S7 vs BMW 650i Gran Coupe vs Mercedes-Benz CL S550

All three cars are variants of each manufacturer's midsize offering: The S7 is built off the A6; the Gran Coupe is based on the F12 6 Series (which is in turn based on the current 5 Series platform); and the CLS is born from the E-Class. So, each company has found a way to charge more money for essentially the same old mimosa and pancakes. Even if they are just the same old cars in fancy new suits, don't nice suits cost money? Not only that, but at least one of these lookers has been much improved versus the donor whence it came. Plus, aren't businesses in the business of making profits? In a sense, then, these three cars represent their respective makers' best foot forward. But they also highlight the club feet, as all three reveal their manufacturers' current weaknesses.   Starting with the Benz, we're talking bad design, inside and out. Sure, the CLS is decent-looking, but this sleek, sloped-roof "coupe" segment is all about sexy metal appeal. Mercedes should know this, as the automaker invented it! But the Benz looks like a clenched fist, which may very well be sexy to the German mind-set. Compared with the other two contenders, the CLS comes off a little dumpy and a tad frumpy. The interior is about to be refreshed, and boy howdy, it needs it. The exterior is going to have to wait a while. The Gran Coupe, meanwhile, exhibits BMW's new favorite sin: sloth, in terms of porky weight (4603 pounds, the heaviest in our test by nearly 200 pounds more than the S7) and laggard throttle response. As for the Audi, the S7 is yet another chapter of too much weight hanging off the wrong side of the front halfshafts, resulting in numb steering feel and sketchy, make-your-palms-sweat understeer.
As is often said, there is no perfect car. Yet these three cars come closer to the Platonic automotive ideal than most. I feel justified and factual in stating that today's "loser" (for lack of a softer synonym) might just be the very best third-place finisher in Motor Trend history. I'd be thrilled to wake up and find its keys in a bowl near my front door. That third-place car is the Mercedes-Benz CLS550, the car that started it all. "Crazy how much changes in a year or so," said executive editor Ron Kiino. "The last time we compared a CLS550 (against the regular-flavor A7 and the Jaguar XJ -- "High Fashion and Misdemeanors," September 2011), it offered the best combo of sport and luxury. Now, I find myself ranking it third." The CLS has done nothing wrong. It's just that the competition artfully stepped up their games. A year ago BMW didn't even have an offering in this high-concept segment. And the A7, while pretty much OK (and quite easy on the eyes) just couldn't compete with the big Benz's overall might and refinement.  Things have changed. Complete with AWD and a 402-hp, 4.7-liter twin-turbo V-8 (biggest displacement engine of the test), the CLS550's 0-60 and quarter-mile times were the slowest of the trio, with 4.4 and 12.9 seconds at 110.6 mph -- more or less even with a Ford Mustang GT, but definitely slower than the other two. The 445-hp BMW Gran Coupe clips 60 mph in 4.2 seconds before tackling the quarter mile in 12.7 seconds at 108 mph. The Audi? It's steroidal sports-car-fast, friends, hitting 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and knocking off the quarter in 12.3 seconds at 112.1 mph. Pretty astonishing for a 4435-pounder with the smallest displacement engine of the test, a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 that's probably underrated at only 420 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. And by probably, I mean absolutely, no question.   Numbers matter, but being the slowest isn't the only reason why the CLS came in last. Out on the road, it was also the least impressive. "Feels a bit like a blunt instrument," opined associate editor Scott Evans. "The CLS550 is plenty nimble, but it's not completely graceful. Seems to throw its weight around rather than flow from corner to corner." I found the Benz a bit numb all around compared with the others. Like when you've been to the dentist and the Novocain's almost gone, but not quite. The CLS550 has very good power, heroic grip, and decent steering. It's fun to push hard for small stretches, but, perhaps because of an overabundance of sound insulation, the Mercedes is simply not lively enough for you to remember that you can thrash it. Plus, against the others, it was rather squishy. Said Kiino, "The chassis didn't feel as competent on our loop. The most roll and body move-ment of the three." Evans agreed. "Kind of pushy in sharper corners, and the stability control is overeager. Great touring car, but not the greatest dancer." The CLS did have the most comfortable seats and the best outward visibility, but at the end of the day, third place.
Second place goes to the Audi S7, with a big asterisk. Why? Kiino ranked it first. "C'mon, this is a 420-hp hatchback with AWD and a seven-speed dual-clutch with launch control. I give it the first-place nod, as it's the best combo of speed, luxury, style, and -- what differentiates it from the others -- utility."  In fact, Scott and I (almost) agree. "This car is obscenely fast in a straight line. Luxury sedans with liftgates shouldn't be able to do this," said Evans. "It doubles down by being ridiculously quick in corners as well. The grip is fantastic and the weapons-grade torque absolutely flings you out of every turn." Compared with the CLS, the Audi feels fun -- as if Audi included a little devil sitting on your shoulder, whispering, "Do it, do it, do it faster! Now do it again!" But as much fun as the S7 is, Scott and I couldn't get past the sadly typical bad Audi steering feel. Comfort mode is lacking and Dynamic is overboosted -- there's no sweet spot. Ron described it as "numb but precise." Fair enough. But the mid-corner understeer can best be described as middling. But in this company, and especially at this price, it's unacceptable. Also, the faux carbon-fiber interior is a little silly and tacky. The S7 is a fabulous car, no doubt, but we found one that's better. Meet Goldilocks, aka the BMW 650i xDrive Gran Coupe. "This is what the F10 5 Series should have been from day one," opined Evans. "Forget this Gran Coupe nonsense -- just call this thing the 5 Series and let the current car quietly fade from memory." Scott went on to say that this "may be BMW's best car at the moment." I sure think it is, and have been referring to it as "my favorite BMW" since I first drove it back in August.   As much as I like the looks of the Audi S7, there's simply something more seductive about the Gran Coupe. Even Ron agreed. "Highest curb appeal here, and the valets are more likely to put this one up front." More surprising is the Gran Coupe's interior, the best BMW's ever done by several kilometers. From the two-tone leather to the funky speaker grilles to the ballsy asymmetric center-stack treatment (how can you not love three separate rows of French stitching spreading up and out toward the windshield like some sort of vine?), almost every inch of the car's innards has been crafted to a standard higher than that of any Audi or Mercedes. More important, the Gran Coupe is the first car of its type (four-door coupes) with an interior as radical as its exterior.
Is the Gran Coupe as awesome on our favorite back roads as the S7? No. "The car has nice moves, but it's just not as sharp as the Audi," said Kiino. However, it's plenty sharp. Weight is an issue in sharp corners, of course, but not that much of an issue. "Drives smaller than it is," added Evans. "I found it easy to forget how fast I was going and how big this car is, until I hit a sharp corner. Otherwise, it's a pleasure to drive hard. Nice transitions; very smooth." Like all three competitors, the BMW is AWD. However, to me it felt the most RWD-biased. I also thought it had the best steering feel, as did Evans. "There's a nice weight to the inputs that feels pretty natural. More important, the steering feel is surprisingly good, especially considering that it's AWD and that recent BMWs have demonstrated poor steering feel." If this test were just about pure, back-road capability, the S7 would get the nod. But as the BMW is about 95 percent as capable as the Audi (identical 0.94 max g, too), but offers so much more in desirability, craftsmanship, and that all-important X-factor, we're calling it the winner. As stated, there are no perfect cars. But it's very seldom that I find myself so quick to forgive vehicular flaws. With the BMW Gran Coupe, that's absolutely the case. As such, "The Ultimate Driving Machine" just took on a whole new meaning.

2014 Mercedes CLA 250 vs 2002 C230 Coupe Having informally debuted just before the 2013 North American International Auto Show, the forthcoming 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250  pledges to be the three-pointed star’s entry-level vehicle before the A-Class, which may or may not ever reach our shores. The CLA250’s starting price is reputed to be around $30,000 with front-wheel drive (all-wheel drive will be available), but don’t be surprised to see official pricing delivered in, of all places, Mercedes’ Super Bowl ad.

2014 Mercedes CLA 250 vs 2002 C230 Coupe

The least-expensive, new Mercedes you can currently get is an option-less C250 Sport sedan for just over $36,000. And with that car, you’d only have three colors to choose – black, red, and white – because the rest of the paints cost an extra $720 ($1515 for Diamond White Metallic).
While you read about the CLA250 in our First Look, we’re thinking back to the last “affordable” Mercedes. We turn the clock back to a time when the Daimler-Chrysler regime was in full swing. It’s the year 2001 and the W203 C-Class is still relishing its first model year. Looking to capture a larger (re: younger) audience and dangle a low asking price in commercials and advertisements in order to drive traffic to showrooms, Mercedes announces the 2002 C230 Kompressor Sports Coupe. Four cloth-covered seats come standard whereas a CD player doesn’t (a bulky 6-disc changer was optional). The total base damage is $25,595 including a $645 destination charge, but marketing efforts unsurprisingly shine up the $24,950 base price. The $25,595 is roughly $33,000 in 2013 dollars. In actuality, the “Sports Coupe” is a two-door hatchback, but look at the price!
The 2002 C230K Sports Coupe came equipped with a supercharged 2.3-liter inline-four producing 192 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque. Sold with a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission, we ran a manual version from 0-60 mph in 7.2 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 15.3 seconds at 91.2 mph. Not too shabby, considering the last C250 Sport sedan (201 hp/229 lb-ft, seven-speed auto) we put on the drag strip took 6.9 seconds and 15.2 seconds at 91.2 mph, respectively.
Former Detroit editor Todd Lassa reviewed the C230K Sports Coupe for the June 2001 magazine issue, and a red test vehicle (pictured at right) partook in our 2002 Car of the Year competition. Lassa noted during his initial drive: “The coolest option – a panoramic sliding sunroof that really lets the sunshine in – adds just 44 pounds. Like the ‘88-‘91 Honda CRX, the Sport Coupe has a small strip of glass in the vertical part of its hatchlid, below the backlight, to aid parallel parking.”
After one year of W203 service, the iron-block 2.3-liter was cast off in favor of a more efficient, supercharged, and all-aluminum 1.8-liter four-cylinder rated for 189 hp and 192 lb-ft. The smaller-displacement mill would be featured in the remaining run of 2003-2005 Sports Coupes; its existence simultaneously helped launch the first 2003 C230K sedan. The six-speed manual and five-speed auto carried on in both the four-door and in the hatchback.

Turning our attention back to 2013, the CLA250 runs with a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four offering 208 hp and 258 lb-ft. Armed with front-wheel drive (the C230K Sports Coupe was rear-wheel drive), a seven-speed twin-clutch auto, and a remarkable 0.23 coefficient of drag (the C230K’s Cd is a not-terrible 0.29), we’d like to predict the front-drive CLA250 will knock on 30 mpg combined’s door, but the CLA250’s EPA fuel economy figures haven’t been released. The all-wheel-drive numbers will likely be very close to the front-drive ones. Perhaps the most curious fact about the C230 Kompressor Sports Coupe is this: Due to the engine change and other tinkering, only the 2003 and 2005 models with the automatic shared city/highway EPA ratings.

2013 Chrysler 300S Turbine Celebrates Original Turbine Car

Although the original Turbine car was powered by Chrysler’s fourth-generation turbine engine – rated at 130 hp and 425 lb-ft of torque – mated to a torque-converter-less TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission, the 300S Turbine retains its 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and eight-speed automatic. Changes to the 300S Turbine are purely cosmetic, including the matte copper paint, which is a modern take on the original 1963 Chrysler Turbine’s Firefrost bronze hue. Tinted headlights and taillights, a gloss black roof, polished mirrors, grille, and 22-inch “Turbine” wheels contrast with the matte finish.

Johnson Controls displayed several technologies that promise to deliver lighter-weight, lower-cost, feature-rich interiors that look ritzy, thanks to these ideas:
Rear Projection Dash 300x187 imageRear-Projection Dash Want full color, on a bigger screen that doesn’t have to be flat? Switching from thin-film transistor (TFT) technology Digital Light Processing (DLP) can project a larger image on a complex surface in full color for the same money. The demonstrator used a single 0.45-inch square DLP chip to project both a 15-inch (diagonal) cluster display AND a head-up display, also in full color. A second DLP powered the center stack, again on a 3D surface, this time with touch controls. To these eyes the resolution of these screens was lower than the latest TFTs can manage, but the effect was cool. The head-up display is capable of a 10-15-degree image size (measured from the viewer’s eye), as compared with 6-7 degrees for today’s state-of-the-art BMW color HUD. Look for this in two to three years.
Bespoke Overall 300x187 imageBespoke Cockpit Concept This flashy looking interior uses a lot of natural low-cost low-mass materials leveraging JCI’s Compression Hybrid Molding (CHyM). This renewable substrate is cheaper to tool and can be covered in high-end fabrics for an upscale look, and where the door panel meets the dash, the concept has a concave substrate with fabric stretched across it to provide a zero-gap when it closes against the matching convex dash surface. In place of a heavier, costlier hinged center-console lid is a roll-top solution covered in soft material. It can roll to a 2-inch radius. Inside, the console are false-floor “peel to reveal” covers made of material like that used on most iPad covers. They fold out of the way for deeper storage or to provide layered levels. The dash features in-mold decoration that places capacitive switches and displays behind a uniform black surface. Finally, the door armrests are soft and slide fore/aft to accommodate the driver’s elbow position (why has it taken so long to think of this?!). Beneath these armrests are storage bins with USB power.
Synergy Seat cutaway seat1 222x300 imageGen 3 Synergy Seat The heart of this lightweight high-feature seat is its carbon-fiber reinforced composite shell that incorporates the mounting points for many optional features (adjustable bolsters, fans, etc.). The outer surface can either be carbon fiber or a covered with a film for some other look. Moving up from there, is VariTec cushion foam comprising a Visco-foam (think Tempur-Pedic) atop a firmer layer of foam, but formed in a single step in one mold. On top of that goes FaserTec material (a.k.a. rubberized hair made of Sri Lankan coconut fibers) that seat fans can blow through. The trim cover is a premium fabric joined by high-frequency welding, not stitching (this technique has been used for embossing, but is now capable of joining fabrics). The fully powered seat is capped off by a four-way adjustable head restraint that is fully self contained (all motors are in the head rest, not the seat body), so that the power head rest could be an easy dealer upgrade.
Inspiration Seat Designed for Chinese honchos who ride in back, these thrones adjust every which way and provide heat, coolth, and multiple modes of massage. The cool thing is that they’re controlled entirely by an iPad or similar tablet, which connects to the seat via Bluetooth. This approach makes the HMI control interface easily upgradable and easily tailored to multiple languages (with tricky character sets).
2013 Ford Escape Schaeffler Efficient Future Mobility Vehicle 300x187 imageSchaeffler has launched an Efficient Future Mobility project that will gradually bring a 2013 Ford Escape AWD up to 2020 fuel-economy standards realizing a 15-percent fuel savings using technologies the company is readying for widespread use, including:
All-wheel-drive Disconnect Disconnecting the rear wheels and all the shafts and differentials they connect to when four-wheel traction is not needed will improve the Escape’s economy by 5 percent. Simple clutches disconnect the half-shafts at the rear wheels, and up in the transmission there’s a friction clutch that brings the rotating mass up to speed, after which a ball-ramp setup keeps the clutch locked without requiring power-robbing hydraulic pressure.
Schaeffler Permanently Engaged Starter Generator PES1 300x275 imagePermanently Engaged Starter One key to quick auto-stop-start restarts and smooth change-of-mind restarts is not having to engage a starter pinion when the flywheel may still be turning. Schaeffler proposes to keep the starter engaged with the ring gear. Instead of having the ring-gear welded to the torque converter or flywheel, it’s connected with a wrap-spring one-way clutch. So if the engine is still spinning down when you decide to restart, the starter just tightens this wrap-spring and accelerates the engine smoothly—no gnashing teeth.
Latching Valve Another challenge faced by start-stop systems is keeping the transmission in gear with the engine off. Electric pumps to maintain pressure rob precious energy and are expensive, but Schaeffler proposes a simple valve to maintain line pressure. As soon as line pressure returns as the engine restarts, the valve opens again. Together these stop-start enablers contribute 3.5 percent fuel savings.
The balance of the savings comes from friction reducing measures in the belt-drive tensioner (1%), roller-bearing balance shafts (1%), Diamond Like Coating (DLC) on the tappets (delivering 70-80 percent of the benefit of roller tappets at half the price), a new torque converter damper that permits earlier lockup (1%), and a switch to Continental’s latest low-rolling-resistance tires. The company expects to complete the project car this year, and then upgrade it with mild-hybrid components to achieve the 2025 fuel economy standard in 2014.

I mean, nobody honestly thinks that a purely solar-powered electric vehicle that takes three weeks to charge and then travels only 70 miles on a charge has any real practical use. But I’m a huge fan of the 2000GT, so I had to stop and get the low-down. The electric motor is from a Lexus LS 600h l, and the batteries are believed to be borrowed from that car as well. The car is one of four 2000GTs that were discovered in Japan in rusty, badly deteriorated condition. All were restored, and this one’s stock parts were all retained and will be re-installed at some point to return the car to factory-new condition. Apparently scion of the family that owns Chiba Toyopet—a giant dealer near Tokyo, worked with Akio Toyoda back in the day. His grandson headed the project to restore the cars and was given permission to prepare this one for Aisin’s Drive Green Experience.

The back end of the 2013 RAV4 has a much cleaner and solid look thanks to a number of styling and functional changes. For starters, the new RAV4 has a traditional liftgate, ditching the quirky side-hinged door used in previous generations. Also, a full-sized spare tire is no longer mounted on the back door, giving way to a space saver tire stored underneath the cargo area (the refreshed third-gen model was offered with this option). The horizontal taillights, which give the 2013 RAV4 a wider-looking stance, are more substantial than the smaller units in the outgoing model. Toyota says the taillights feature vortex generators to improve aerodynamics.The Mazda5 was the only vehicle to fully-integrate the now-defunct – and wild-looking – Nagare design language; though, as the design director points out, some Nagare elements can be seen in the current Mazda3. Jenkins told us the reason Nagare was phased out so quickly was that it didn’t fit the automaker’s new direction. For that new direction, Mazda wants to give its vehicles a more premium, upmarket feel. To do that for the Mazda6, the design had to have simpler and cleaner lines as well as the right proportions. With the new Skyactiv platforms, Jenkins and his team had the opportunity to be more focused on those proportions. Where Nagare was more cab-forward, Kodo is cab-rearward with a longer wheelbase and shorter overhangs.“We’re spending a lot more time studying premium segments and more importantly what makes those cars so desirable,” Jenkins said. “It’s not that we want to compete with premium products; it’s more that we want to bring some of those values and those qualities into Mazda products at a good price.

2014 Mazda6 rear three quarter1 300x187 image“We’ve been studying this theme for the last three years, not just for this car, but for all of our future products. We started [Kodo] with the original Shinari concept car and it’s just been getting more and more refined…I think this is the best version of it so far. It works really well on the CX-5 and CX-9, but here it really kind of jelled and came together really well.”

The smiley face and sloped front end of previous models has been replaced with a new upright grille that visually lengthens the hood, while the grille’s chrome surround flows into the headlight giving it what Jenkins calls an “eagle eye” effect. A pronounced front diffuser visually plants the cars, making it look more stable according to Jenkins. These changes combine to give the 2014 Mazda6 a more aggressive look. The new Mazda6’s dash-to-axle ratio is longer than other midsize sedans, which gives it more of a rear-drive appearance.

Jenkins is pleased with the rear of the Mazda6. Where the current car is wide throughout, the new car has more of a taper at the top of the rear quarter-panel, which “really improves aerodynamics and, more importantly, gives the car [a] trapezoid stance; where it’s narrow at the top and wider at the bottom,” Jenkins tells us. Overall, the design gives the new 6 a fast cabin and short deck without giving up any cargo room.

2014 Mazda6 cockpit 300x187 imageJenkins notes that the interior design is “somewhat conservative,” as the team focused on making the interior look slim and wide, while putting emphasis on the material quality and fit and finish rather than over-styling it. The interior detailing is a mix of soft-touch materials, brightwork, and piano-black finishes. Jenkins says stitching and perforation work were also major focuses. “Everything is done in a way that is very calm, simple, sophisticated and handsome.” When asked if there is a German influence on the interior, Jenkins acknowledged that the German brands have “set a standard for the industry and have had a profound influence on products at all price points.”

While we think that Jenkins and his team have succeeded with the 2014 Mazda6’s interior, we did ask about the small infotainment/navigation screen on the Mazda Design Director Walks Us Through 2014 Mazda6 Stylingand CX-5.
